When selfishness is the best reason to cooperate - TED Talk
Is it REALLY clever to be good?!
Is giving free hugs really a selfless? I believe it's extremely selfish... and not only there's no reason to feel bad about it, but I highly encourage people to gain selfish benefits from helping others.
What kind of capitalism is that?
A few month ago, I get stopped by a homeless guy who wants change.
I decide to give him a pair of socks I happen to have in my bag (as one does!), and he leaves so happy... probably dreaming of warm feet.
As I bask in my personal satisfaction of having done something good, I see 7 people smiling at me and nodding in approval. There's even a guy who shakes my hand saying it was the right thing to do.
I actually gained so much from giving this pair of socks to a homeless:
• I feel good
• I feel proud
• I have a cool story to tell about my day
• I even received approval from 7 strangers.
So really, am I just a selfish bastard or is there something else?
When is selfishness the best reason to cooperate?
